New DVSA MOT Jacking Beam Requirements Come into Effect 1st April 2026

New DVSA MOT Jacking Beam Requirements Come into Effect 1st April 2026

From the 1st of April 2026, new DVSA jacking equipment specifications will come into effect for Class IV MOT bays across the UK.

Why Are the Requirements Changing?

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, so do the demands placed on workshop equipment. The current specification prevents some newer vehicles, especially hybrid and electric vehicles, from being jacked correctly when carrying out an MOT test.

These vehicles are heavier than standard combustion-powered vehicles, so the equipment needs an increased safe working load.

What Are the New Requirements?

Under the new guidelines, if you apply to open a new MOT centre or make changes to an existing MOT centre from 1st April 2026 onwards, all new and replacement jacking beams supplied to a class IV MOT site will need to be:

  • Minimum safe working load: 2 tonnes
  • Minimum distance between lifting pad centres: 1,700mm

These changes are essential for maintaining safety standards and ensuring your workshop is equipped to handle a wider range of vehicles.

Unsure if your MOT Bay Meets the New Standards?

Any existing bays already meet DVSA standards. The updated specification applies only to new test lanes or bays requiring replacement equipment, so you can be confident that your current bay remains compliant and fully suitable for continued use.
