Above-ground 2 post lifts and ramps

2 post lifts and ramps for above-ground servicing

The 2 post lift, also known as 2 post ramps,  is the most popular vehicle lifting solution in the UK for servicing, maintenance and repair work. Surface-mounted 2 post lifts are widely used in modern motor vehicle workshops thanks to their space efficiency, strength and ease of use.

At Straightset, our range of above-ground 2 post ramps and lifts has been carefully selected to meet the demanding standards required in today's automotive workshops.

As we are not owned by an equipment manufacturer, we have solutions for all budgets, space requirements and individual needs - including Supertracker, Space, AMI and Nussbaum. We also ensure spare parts for 2 post lifts are readily available to minimise downtime.

What are 2 post car lifts?

A 2 post car lift (also called a two-post vehicle lift) is one of the most widely used pieces of equipment in automotive workshops. It is designed to raise a vehicle off the ground using two vertical columns, allowing full access to the underside for routine servicing, repairs, and inspections. A 2-post lift supports the vehicle by its chassis or designated lifting points, leaving the wheels hanging free, which makes it ideal for mechanical work such as brakes, suspension, and drivetrain repairs. There are many variations available, speaking to our knowledgeable experts we can help find the right car lift for your needs.

2-Post Lift FAQs

What features should I look for when buying a 2-post lift?

Consider lifting height, arm length, and weight capacity to suit your vehicles and workspace. Ensure the maximum lift height works with your garage ceiling and provides comfortable access for technicians. Adjustable arms should align with the recommended lifting points of your vehicles for safe support. Other features to consider include hydraulic vs. electric operation, built-in safety locks, cable or chain design, and ease of maintenance.

What’s the difference between symmetric and asymmetric 2-post lifts?

Symmetrical 2-Post lifts are best for vans. Asymmetrical 2-Post lifts have 2 long and 2 short arms and are suitable for cars to enable access via the vehicle front doors. Symmetric lifts position the vehicle evenly between the posts with equal-length arms, ideal for trucks and heavier vehicles. Asymmetric 2-Post lifts rotate the columns and use shorter front arms to position the vehicle further back, allowing easier door access and better balance for cars and light-duty vehicles.

Are 2-post car lifts safe for home and professional use?

Yes. When properly installed on the correct concrete slab and used according to manufacturer guidelines, 2-post lifts are very safe. Built-in safety locks, arm restraints, and proper weight ratings protect both the vehicle and operator. Regular inspections and maintenance are essential for safe operation.

What types of vehicles can a 2-post lift handle?
Most standard 2- Post lifts can handle cars, SUVs, vans and light trucks. Capacity ratings typically range from 3 – 4.5 tonnes. Always check your lift’s rated capacity and compare it to your heaviest vehicle to ensure safe lifting.

How thick should concrete be for a 2-post lift?

Most 2-post lifts require concrete that is at least 160mm thick and C25 strength and upwards; this varies depending on the capacity of the lift, with heavier-duty 2-posts requiring thicker and stronger concrete. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation specifications to ensure proper anchoring and safety.

Does a 2-post lift need to be bolted to the floor?

Yes. 2-post lifts must always be anchored to the concrete using heavy-duty anchor bolts. Bolting the lift down ensures stability and prevents movement whilst lifting vehicles.

How do I maintain a 2-post lift?

Maintain your 2-post lift by performing daily inspections, lubricating moving parts, and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
