New MOT Requirements for Zero-Emission Goods Vehicles from June 1st, 2026

New MOT Requirements for Zero-Emission Goods Vehicles from June 1st, 2026

From June 1st, 2026, zero-emission goods vehicles between 3,501kg and 4,250kg will be reclassified as Class 7 vehicles and will therefore need to have a Class 7 MOT test.

Why Are the Requirements Changing?

These changes have been introduced to increase testing capacity at HGV testing stations and to support the continued adoption of zero-emission vehicles within commercial and haulage fleets.

Although these vehicles are heavier due to their battery systems, they are otherwise comparable in size and operation to existing Class 7 vehicles.

What Are the New Requirements?

Under the new classification:

  • Class 7 testing stations must accept zero-emission goods vehicles between 3,501kg and 4,250kg.
  • Existing Class 7 MOT testing standards will apply to these vehicles, with the addition of speed limiter checks.
  • Minimum tyre tread depth requirements will increase from 1mm to 1.6mm, in line with current Class 7 vehicles.

What Counts as a Zero-Emission Goods Vehicle?

A zero-emission goods vehicle is defined as a vehicle that:

  • Has no internal combustion engine; or
  • Has an internal combustion engine that emits zero grams of CO₂ per kilometre.

This does not include hybrid vehicles of any kind, including range extenders using diesel, petrol, or LPG engines for propulsion or battery charging.
